13kg gold Qur'an to be displayed in Tehran

A rare manuscript of the Qur'an, made of 99.9 per cent pure gold, is to be displayed in Tehran at an exhibition of sacred Islamic texts.

According to RIA Novosti, 14 pages of the manuscript have already been sent to the Iranian capital in anticipation of the exhibit, which runs from September 22nd to October 2nd.

The news organisation reported that the book was crafted over a period of 18 months by the Moscow Mint and is a faithful copy of the Uthman Qur'an, the oldest surviving copy of the religious text.

The manuscript, which has over 160 pages, weighs 13kg and has an estimated value of $5.9 million (£2.95 million).

According to Press TV, each gold sheet is half a millimetre thick and the text is three times larger than that of the original.

The Golden Qur'an Project was carried out to encourage co-operation and fellowship between Russia and the Islamic world.
