Famous gold
museum burgled
A famous Portuguese gold
museum has been robbed, it has been revealed.
Reuters reports that the gold museum in Viana do Castelo was infiltrated by a
gang of be-wigged thieves yesterday in the early hours.
Furthermore, the news agency reports that the crime occurred despite a police
presence in the city for a meeting of European Union foreign ministers.
"I heard them breaking the museum cabinets while police surrounded the area,"
Luis Costa said, according to Reuters.
According to a local radio station, a witness saw the robbers exchange gunfire
with police before fleeing the scene in a van.
The local radio station reported that the thieves also hit a neighbouring
jewellery store, taking gold jewellery.
EU foreign ministers are currently in Portugal to discuss the new EU treaty
which is to replace the failed EU constitution and Kosovo, Makfax reports.
