Gold jewellery
to be the focus for Philippines valley
The Compostela Valley
province in the Philippines has announced that it is set to focus on a jewellery
making future, harnessing local gold resources in the process.
According to the region's governor, Arthur Uy, jewellery making will be a
priority of his administration, replacing the focus on small and large-scale
gold mining that has previously characterised the area's involvement with the
metal.
"They have the capacity and the skills, we have the resources. We just need the
technical people to come in for designs and production style fit for the
market," Mr Uy said, referring to the area and the people, according to
MindaNews.
He claimed that it was logical for the valley area to process the gold reserves
locally and produce gold jewellery, with areas that do not have such reserves -
such as Meycauayan in Bulacan - creating jewellery.
The governor also suggested that the process has already begun in the area, with
refinements and improvements to the system now needed.
Compostela Valley is located on Mindanao, the second-largest island in the
Philippines.
