Jeddah Gate of
Gold festival extended
The Jeddah Gate of Gold
festival has been extended to run through Ramadan, Eid Al-Fitr and Saudi
Arabia's national holiday on September 23rd, according to the Arab News.
The Gate of Gold festival, which kicked off with the city's 45-day annual summer
festival in mid-July, has been extended due to a 30 per cent increase in demand
for gold and jewellery.
Saleh Al-Turki, the president of the city's chamber of commerce and industry,
told the news agency that this year's tourism festival has been "an
unprecedented success".
World Gold Council consultant Bisher Diab told the Arab News: "Gold symbolises
wealth and beauty and the industry is considered one of the oldest and most
professionally run in the world.
"The city has earned an international reputation for excellent quality of
fabrication and accuracy of caratage," he added.
It is estimated that around 400 gold and jewellery retailers are participating
in the festival, which is co-organised by the World Gold Council and the Jeddah
chamber of commerce and industry's gold and jewellery committee.
According to Arab News, the Saudi Arabian city boasts more than 800 gold retail
outlets.
